I am Deeply Stupid
Somewhere in the books section of the Telegraph, I read an article that said "the Left" could not explain why George W. Bush is so popular. The author seemed to think this, even if true, which it isn't, proved something positive about Bush. It reminded me of those articles about the alleged artist Jack Vettriano. Apparently "art critics" can't explain why he is considered "the people's painter".
I would say the answer to both is the same one we might give if asked to explain why bin Laden is so popular among Muslims. Lies and kitsch are seductive, particularly among those who are too lazy or incurious to look any further.
So, to bring this back to something approaching literature, reading that interview with Tom Wolfe only confirms the impression of a man who will know the opposite of caricature only at the moment of his own death (not too far off I hope): You are considered twisted and retarded if you support Bush in this election. I have never come across a candidate who is so reviled. Reagan was sniggered it, but this is personal, real hatred.
Yes Mr Wolfe. It's called disapproval of Christofascism and mass murder. But what does the Left know about them?
