Kevin Coyne

Written by:Stephen Mitchelmore.

Last night, on BBC Radio3, there was a session by Kevin Coyne. You can listen to it in the archives. You might recognise his name as writer of two songs covered by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy some years ago.

Coyne has also been published as a writer by Jelinek’s English publisher: Serpent’s Tail.

But listen to the session: it is extraordinary, particularly the first song Smile Right Back. It’s hard to believe he has lung fibrosis and sang this session from his wheelchair. ‘One of the great British soul voices’ says Andy Kershaw. No question.

Also, he played Sandy Denny’s Who Knows Where the Time Goes?. Another great English voice. It’s like the Peel show used to be, without the eight minute dance tunes. Almost perfect.

Serpent’s tail may have published Kevin’s first books but his last completed book “That Old Suburban Angst” is available now.
