Electronic Travel Tales

Written by:Chris Mitchell.

Travel memoirs are starting to be a big category in the still emerging ebooks market. With my new found love of PDF documents, (especially if they’re made by ChangeThis), I’ve got used to reading on the screen. But the onus on the author to hold your attention is even greater because screen-reading is still simply not as pleasurable as its paper equivalent.

Things Are Different In Africa is an ebook that you can read online through its print-on-demand publisher iUniverse. It’s the memoir of Frederick Pitts, an American gentleman of a senior age who packed in his job, gave all his money to his children and then headed out to spend two years in Africa with the Peace Corps, slap bang in the middle of the war-torn Democratic Republic Of Congo. This, to me, is enough to get my interest - Pitts clearly has a tale to tell, but the trick is whether he can tell it well. From the few beginning pages I read online, the answer is yes. Sadly iUniverse’s online reading tool deliberately shrinks the font so it’s too painful to read anymore. When I get a permanent address again, I’ll be asking Mr Pitts to send me the real thing. In the meantime, you can order it from iUniverse or Amazon.com - there’s a PDF version available there too.
