Gtz and Meyer
I’m told by one who knows that David Albahari’s novel Gtz and Meyer is a terrific read. Nicholas Lezard thinks so too. He explains the title: Gtz and Meyer are two SS non-commissioned officers who drive a Saurer lorry in wartime Serbia. It differs from other lorries in that its exhaust pipe can be connected to the airtight compartment at the back, which can hold, at a squeeze, 100 Jews.
The ‘Prince Bonehead’ referred to at the beginning of his review is Prince Harry, the one who likes dressing up in uniforms, and who is probably keen on driving trucks too.
