Things Are Different In Africa
One of the first books to make it out here to Spike HQ in Thailand, Things Are Different In Africa is a memoir of Peace Corps volunteer Frederick Pitts' year spent in the Congo. I just finished reading it this morning and can thoroughly recommend it - A Year In Provence it ain't. Fred is a retired Florida businessman who has avoided the verbiage trap of most memoirs. Things Are Different is a concise book written in spare and simple prose that's refreshingly free of travel cliches. Pitts captures the utterly alien experience of living in a tiny Congoese village hundreds of miles from nowhere, and straightforwardly explains the frustrations and small victories he encountered during his time there. It's an excellent personal insight both into the complexities of Congolese culture and the life of a Peace Corps volunteer. Fred has his own website and you can find Things Are Different In Africa at Amazon.com through the links below.
