The art of publishing novellas

Written by:Stephen Mitchelmore.

Summer reading often means reading in places congenial to relaxed concentration yet unfriendly toward books themselves. Often I choose small books to read on the lawn opposite the office during lunch, or on the beach at weekends. Melville House Books series The Art of the Novella couldnt be more useful in this regard. Right now Im reading Michael Kohlhaas by Kleist. Once that’s read, I will go on to Guy de Maupassants The Horla, newly translated by Charlotte Mandell, before leaping into the unknown by reading some classic British literature: RL Stevensons The Beach at Falesa. Only trouble is, its raining in England.

The books also have those flaps that can act as bookmarks. Do they have a name?

French flaps:

“Trade pb covers with inturned “front flaps” and “back flaps”, as if the cover were covering boards, except it isn’t. A bit of fancy packaging ostentation.”
