Lowell’s letters

I've been impressed by the quality of the reviews of The Letters of Robert Lowell. Jonathan Raban's in the NYRB. Graeme Richardson's in Aret?. Perhaps this is due to the fascinating subject and the kind of people who appreciate him. Still, I remain slightly bewildered that the Collected Poems ( brilliantly reviewed at length by Michael Hofmann in the LRB) is still not out in paperback. It would be NICE to be able to read Lowell sometime.

Isn’t it because Faber just roll out these prestigious hardback Collecteds – Marianne Moore, W. S. Graham, Ted Hughes, Hugo Williams – to make extra money from stuff which, for the most part, is already in their catalogue. They consider paperbacks of these books beneath them. The U.S. edition is going pretty cheap second-hand though.

But the US edition is still only hardback isn’t it?

The book also seems too big for a paperback. Maybe it would be too expensive for a pb and that puts them off.

    Yes.
    The bastards.
