Godard: old and new
Apparently the movie industry is worried about the free downloading of films from the internet. Not having a great attraction to the form, I have yet to download even one. But what if the only film you’d really like to own, and for which you’d pay well, is denied release? Jean-Luc Godard’s Je Vous Salue, Marie (Hail Mary) was shown on British TV in May 1987 and has never appeared on DVD. Someone over-taped my video of it. I was looking around the World Cinema section of Borders this morning checking out what Godard was there. Of course there was only the early stuff, which I find deeply boring; the kind of films people talk about loudly in bars. There was not one of his great, late works. Why?
The alternatives on offer, by the way, included Debbie Does Dallas 1 + 2. Need I ask the same question?
The good news is that Godard’s latest - Notre Musique - is out in two weeks. You won’t find it on Amazon UK but it is on Play.com.

Why?
Because until the past year or so, not that many of anyone’s past works were available on DVD. Even Godard’s early ones, probably a “must-have” for moneyed cinephiles of a certain age, were only just made available.
Eloge de l’amour is available, as are Godard’s recent CD-ROM projects.
