Irregular Spikes for 2005-07-27
My future entries of the "remaindered links" variety are going to appear under the heading of "Irregular Spikes". This arrangement serves both the writer and the reader: I don't have to come up with a vague new title every few days, while the reader doesn't have to guess what the post is about (particularly useful in light of BritLitBlogs.com).
A spike is, among other things, a burst of extra voltage in a power line that lasts only for a fraction of a second, which to my mind evokes the idea of quick links pretty nicely. The spikes are irregular because they're compiled by me, Ismo Santala. Beyond the puny wordplay there is also the fact that I'll be putting these little collections together somewhat erratically. Alright. Here we go:
Fantastic Zoology
An illustrated version of The Book of Imaginary Beings by Jorge Luis Borges and Margarita Guerrero. Naturally, my favorite creature is the Monkey of the Inkpot.
Silva Rhetoricae
"A forest is the metaphor for this site. Like a forest, rhetoric provides tremendous resources for many purposes. However, one can easily become lost in a large, complex habitat (whether it be one of wood or of wit)." More about the art of rhetoric: a glossary of terms, a list of logical fallacies.
Donald Barthelme's short stories
"'The world is everything that was formerly the case,' the group leader said, 'and now it is time to get back on the bus.'" -Don B.
Timeline of Art History
"A chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of the history of art from around the world, as illustrated especially by the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection." See also: Artchive, ARC Museum.
Edison Motion Pictures
"I am experimenting upon an instrument which does for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear, which is the recording and reproduction of things in motion ...." -Thomas A. Edison, 1888
Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music
Presented as a groovy map with lots of lines showing the crisscrossing influences. Includes some great samples.
