Charlie Kaufman’s "Hope Leaves the Theater"

by Ismo Santala on September 17, 2005

Being Charlie Kaufman has just uploaded an MP3 of his sound play “Hope Leaves the Theater”. Part of a project called “Theater of the New Ear”, the play complements/comments on a theater piece by the Coens and stars Hope Davis, Meryl Streep and Peter Dinklage. The download will only be available for a week.

Some of you might want to take a look at Kaufman’s screenplays: the script for Human Nature works better than the film, while Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind are great examples of engaging and uncluttered screenwriting.

Here’s a test: start reading with the intention of keeping count of the pages and see how quickly you get pulled into the flow of the story. “What, I just read through 30 pages!?”
