An Infamous Past: EM Cioran
Desultory searching on Amazon led to me to notice a forthcoming book about a writer I have written about for Spike. An Infamous Past: subtitled E. M. Cioran and the Rise of Fascism in Romania is published in November by Ivan R Dee. Marta Petreu writes about the man who 'alongside Heidegger, Sartre, Paul de Mann [sic], and others, was one of the great scholars of the twentieth century to be seduced by totalitarianism'. Well, I suppose one has to distinguish oneself from Michael Ignatieff in some way.
Cioran was full of regret and remorse of his twilight years apparently. I also have my regrets: I wish my rambling, ill-focused essay on Cioran would disappear. It's nearly ten years since I wrote it for Spike unaware, at the time, of the imperishability of webpages. And no, I'm not providing a link.
