Ralph Steadman: the Spike interview
Craig Johnson delivers the goods again with a cracking conversation with one of my all-time heroes, Mr Gonzo Art himself, Ralph Steadman. The pair of them take on the death of Hunter, the death of the American dream, the death of political representation and the paranoia that arrives when you start wondering, “How does my heart keep beating?” It’s a monster piece, transcribed almost verbatim from the tapes. A superb antidote to those feeling in the doldrums with Hunter’s passing, as Mr Steadman still has enough wit, grit and bullshit for both of them.
We’re hoping Craig might get an update from Mr Steadman when he returns from the States after HST’s memorial service - there have been some bits of artwork promised, so we’ll have to wait and see if that comes good.
On a related note, there’s some limited edition Steadman prints going to fund the launch of the Hunter S. Thompson Foundation - not sure what the Foundation will be doing with its cash - handing out laser juice to deserving candidates?
