Dalrymple isn’t his real name
The lead article in the TLS is enthusiastic about one of the most vile books to be published anywhere: Theodore Dalrymple's collection of hate-filled essays about modern Britain written for Far Right US publications. Just reading the review is an upsetting experience. While one recognises aspects of this country all right, it's a relief that the reviewer makes the point screaming out at one (though not visible in the online extract): that our culture's vulgarity and unrestrained hedonism has a strong US flavour. He has to point it out because nowhere does Dalrymple acknowledge this. Dalrymple, in the best tradition of foaming-at-the-mouth Daily Mail editorials, blames the permissive ?mandarins? and the liberal press instead.
However, I wouldn't go as far as the reviewer and claim that it is a US import. One only has to read about London in Hogarth?s time, and events at places such as Tyburn and Bartholomew's Fair to recognise that such degeneracy is nothing new.
Nor is self-blindness. The publications for which Theodore Dalrymple writes cheer-lead terror and mass murder across the globe. Give me David Beckham's poor taste anyday. He hasn't changed his name to some stupid, fogeyish anachronism.
The Dullpimples of this world spent the 1980s aggressively promoting a philosophy which itself aggressively promoted a “fuck-you” anti-society, anti-community, pro-self interest ethos; and then they act all shocked when some of this attitude rubs off on the proles.
He and his are the spiritual descendants of the original high priest of “Why-Oh-Why” Oswald Spengler; a nutty sociologist who reckoned society was going to the dogs in the 1920s. His solution? Don’t be stupid, be a smarty, come on join the Nazi Party!
