For whom the bell-end tolls
The Independent says farewell to secondhand bookshops. “In three years, the number of second-hand bookshops has plummeted from 1,200 to about 600, mainly due to the rise of sales on the internet.” The paper speaks to Frank Westwood, owner of one surviving shop in Petersfield: “If it hadn’t been for my two sons who want me to keep going, I would have given it up.” Coincidentally, one of his sons is a famous local figure. But would you buy a used book from this man?
