Genet meets Burroughs
One of the best literary discoveries I’ve made in the past couple of years are the works of that ole devil Jean Genet. I find his life and writing equally and endlessly fascinating.
The latest issue of the Monthly Review features this interesting piece (beware; Word document) about Genet’s visit to Chicago in 1968 to cover the Democratic Convention for Esquire Magazine. I’d vaguely heard about this, but had no idea he’d met up with William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Norman Mailer and then set about getting attacked by police. Here was a man with a sense of occasion!
Genet and Burroughs; what a meeting of minds. I reckon Jean would win in a fight, provided William didn’t have his gun with him.

The three of them gaze at me from that event, in a framed photo on my desk.
