Where for art thou, Lenin?

Written by:Stephen Mitchelmore.

I must admit, I haven’t read the Guardian’s long piece on the most influential British political bloggers. I did a page search for ‘Lenin’ and didn’t get one result. This was enough for me to lose interest. That and the evil smile of Oliver Kamm. -shivers-

What I admire about Lenin’s Tomb is that he seems to read and absorb everything. One has complete confidence in his mastery of the material. He’s also a brilliant writer. The earliest link from Splinters that I can find is from June 2003. Since then he’s become a major voice, though not one congenial to the Guardian of course who prefer the oxymorons of the ‘pro-war Left’.

One prominent member of that camp (in all its senses) was Johann Hari, columnist for the Independent. I say was. Read this brave piece subtitled War crimes and silence on the use of chemical weapons in Fallujah (currently being downgraded to a mere ‘controversy’ by the corporate media). I presume this article won’t be appearing in print.

Yes, Lenin’s ommision was shameful I thought.

Johann was initially credulous about the Iraqi invasion, but its good to see him recognising his errors. His support always seemed more nuanced than the likes of Aaronovitch, Hitchens at el. Heaven hath more joy at the sinner that repenteth etc.

He’s still a bit “centrist” for my tastes and too ready to give Blair the benefit of the doubt, but I find him a very engaging, entertaining and likeable writer.

He does very good in depth reports on stuff that often falls off the radar like the scandal of low paid piece-rate workers, abuse of aslyum seekers, and the madness of the climate change deniers in the US.

His cultural spots are always of interest too, even if I don’t always agree with them. This spot about both Rome and BBC’s “Rome” is very good indeed.

Keep it up, I love it. I thrive on praise and high marks - like Lisa Simpson. You should see me in college at nights - always the first with my hand up, “me sir, me sir, I know the answer”.

Interesting that the US/UK spin on it is directly undermined by a ’90s Pentagon report

“PRESIDENT SADDAM ((HUSSEIN)) MAY HAVE POSSIBLY USED WHITE
PHOSPHOROUS (WP) CHEMICAL WEAPONS AGAINST KURDISH REBELS AND THE
POPULACE IN ERBIL (GEOCOORD:3412N/04401E) (VICINITY OF IRANIAN
BORDER) AND DOHUK (GEOCOORD:3652N/04301E) (VICINITY OF IRAQI BORDER) PROVINCES, IRAQ. THE WP CHEMICAL WAS DELIVERED BY
ARTILLERY ROUNDS AND HELICOPTER GUNSHIPS (NO FURTHER INFORMATION
AT
THIS TIME).
