FreeCinema Charting these Fair Isles
Great news - the BFI has launched a new DVD compiling some of the Free Cinema films of the 50s and 60s, social-realist cinema which gave the first filmed voice of working-class Britain. Fantastic stuff, will get soon. I knew about this from a link from Morrissey Solo, as the Mozter not only loves this stuff but sampled one of the films on the DVD -We Are The Lambeth Boys - for the track Spring-Heeled Jim “and they catch ‘im, and they say ‘e’s men’al!” The new album’s very good by the way, review soon you lucky people. And I’m seeing him in a week lucky me.
With each new DVD release however I only seem to be reminded of a gaping hole. Naked, Mike Leigh’s masterpiece and in my perverted view easily one of the best films ever made has still not had a DVD release. I find this nothing short of staggering. Have you got a goblet or something? ‘Cos my heart is bleedin!
