Chavez Makes Chomsky A Bestseller Again

by Chris Mitchell on September 24, 2006

“After Hugo Chavez recommended Noam Chomsky’s Hegemony or Survival: America’s Quest for Global Dominance at the U.N. Wednesday, the book shot up bestseller lists. What’s more, Chavez is a big fan of Don Quixote, and last year, he handed out a million free copies of the book in Venezuelan squares to celebrate its 400th anniversary” [via World Hum]

“The people of the United States should read this … instead of watching Superman movies,” Chavez later told reporters.

As of Thursday afternoon, Hegemony or Survival, originally published in 2003, had jumped into the top 10 of Amazon and Barnes & Noble.com.

And what a jump: Amazon said the book had zoomed from No. 20,664 on its bestseller list to No. 4 for the day.

Metropolitan Books, an imprint of Henry Holt, has ordered an additional paperback printing of 25,000 copies.” [via LATimes]

Notice too how the “report” about him thinking Chomsky was dead was fabricated and then repeated as fact by professional journalists:
