Literary Archaeology: Ballard’s House In Shanghai

by Chris Mitchell on October 1, 2007

Just wrote up a quick post on Rick McGrath’s fascinating account of his 2 year odyssey to find JG Ballard’s 1930s childhood home in Shanghai, culminating in Rick recently flying halfway round the world to see it for himself. You can read the complete story, with lots of pix, here. I’m half tempted to go myself before it disappears – I’ve always wanted to see Shanghai.

Then I’d say… go! The JGB house will be there for the forseeable future, as it looks as if a lotta dough has been poured into the place, but the other Ballardian sites are in danger of destruction. Thanx for the promo, Chris… I’d love to share a beer with you when I make it to Bangkok!

For sure Rick! I met up with Simon Sellars in Melbourne in July and we had an awesome night. Hope you’re coming here soon

Hi, if you do come one day, I’ll be happy to extend the same tips/tour that me and Rick went over. Have since found other relevant sites too.

Hey Andy – that’s very kind of you. I’d love to meet up with you and do the whole Ballard tour – looks like you could have a burgeoning business there!

When’s the best time of year to visit Shanghai? I am thinking mainly of the pollution problems – I live in Bangkok so I am pretty keen to escape pollution when I go travelling. I am guessing maybe Spring or Autumn?
