More Recently Arrived Books
Ellis Sharp (who writes The Sharp Side) has a new novel out - Walthamstow Central. The Amazon page is hopelessly bare of information, and publisher Zoilus seem to have forgotten to add it to their website - Ellis’ anti-biography is here. It’s set in the future but the title just keeps making me think of the aural turd that was East 17 - I have a feeling that was deliberate.
To lighten things up, Penguin sent a shiny hardback of obscene cartoons by Dagsson. Is This Supposed To Be Funny? has already provoked The Sun into saying “Ban this sick book” without a hint of irony -it’s the front cover quote on the book itself and the press release came with a lovingly full sized photocopy of the said Sun article. Dagsson is very sick and very funny, but not particularly shocking - maybe 10 years ago, but this is the sort of stuff the young folk talk about all the time. Cunt is the new fuck etc. For a Finnish bloke, it’s peculiarly English in its delight in toilet humour, which I thoroughly applaud. There’s lots of very bad taste sex gags as well, so yes, it’s a winner. Best of all, you can read it in about 10 minutes in the bookshop.
