MES – Art and Writing
Nicked wholesale from the Fall Online site - Taylor Parkes in The Quietus writes a great in depth essay on "Mark E Smith as a narrative lyric writer". This examines the dizzying imagination and warped narrative sensibility that went into The Fall's "story" songs, which as Parkes says, had largely finished by 1988. A fascinating read, and a must read, for anyone who doubts MES's status as a true and unique writer. Many people nowadays of course see him as a novelty drunk, and he often does little to dispel this. But in clips like this one , where he discusses British Art for the Tate Channel, there's real wisdom still amongst the mumbling. Good to see Wyndham Lewis being plugged again too, as ever.
