At Last! The Mark E. Smith Autobiog

I’ve had this bloody thing on order from Amazon for over fifteen months now, and with the publishing date forever slipping further into the distance. But now it seems M.E.S’s memoir Renegade is finally about to emerge. Judging from this extract it seems great fun.
Still no sign of this though. Boo.

An indiscreet Ian Rankin

Ian Rankin was a naughty boy at last week’s British Book Awards. Apparently the booze-addled Scottish crime writer got all starry-eyed for a 26-year old groupie, who he took back to his room at the Grovesnor House hotel.
“I got very drunk and did some stupid things which I now regret. I have let my whole […]

Kellman, London, Minotaurs

Some slight nuggets of great interest in this week’s Guardian Review
-Alberto Manguel on Jack London’s great unfinished novel the Assassination Bureau. I’d not heard of it before and it sounds fascinating. The concept of the novel itself is intriguing (a bit like a more well thought version of the morally righteous revenge fantasies as explored […]

The Ginseng Hunter

Just been sent a copy of Jeff Talarigo’s The Ginseng Hunter. Set on the Chinese border with North Korea, Talarigo spent time camping on the border to experience it for himself and interviewing North Korean refugees. I very much like the idea of novelists getting involved in history that’s happening right now and drawing out […]

Pentagon’s Black Ops Revealed Through Jacket Patches

Fascinating - and scary - piece in the International Herald Tribune about Trevor Paglen’s book I Could Tell You But Then You Would Have To Be Destroyed By Me: Emblems from the Pentagon’s Black World
Skulls. Black cats. A naked woman riding a killer whale. Grim reapers. Snakes. Swords. Occult symbols. A wizard with a staff […]

You Are Still Being Lied To

Disinfo is looking for contributors to You Are Still Being Lied To:
Do you remember where you were when you first saw Disinformation’s mind-altering anthology You Are Being Lied To…? Did those great essays from the likes of Noam Chomsky, Howard Bloom, and Jim Marrs completely challenge your consensus reality? Now you can be a part […]

What Would You Ask Will Self?

You can get answers from the great man himself by sending your question to info@will-self.com by April 7th 2008. Will’s responses to the most intelligent (or, at least, intelligible) questions will be published on will-self.com and his publisher Bloomsbury’s website.

Will Self Blogs Book Tour

Will Self is blogging while on his never-ending book tour and there’s a chance to win a copy of his new novel The Butt, along with his first ever book Slump.

Keef

Great, and very long, interview with Keith Richards in GQ, available in full online:
“I do think a certain amount of self-knowledge would help people, rather than being always distracted by exteriors. You find a lot of people these days who cannot stand to be alone. And boredom? To me, that’s an illness. You could lock […]

Studs Terkel

Red Pepper magazine’s website has had a radical overhaul recently, with loads of new sections. It has a new review section also, which means my latest review for the mag finally gets online. Huzzahs! Here it is. As I say there, Studs Terkel has been a wonderful chronicler of street level US life for over […]
